Thought I'd bring back this great thread.
Okay I saw Rush Hour 3 today and despite what the critics are saying, I really really liked it. Sure it wasn't exactly PC "smelly Frenchman" and the plot was hardly Citizen Kane, but then it doesn't try to be. It's just a stupid, dumb buddy movie which made me laugh a lot and come out of the cinema happy. I thought it was better than Pirates 3 and Shrek 3, which I hated.
So what was the last film you saw?

Land Of The Dead. Watched it again last night. Pretty awesome. John Leguizamo's in it, so that scores points right away. And Dennis Hopper too.
Pretty basic zombie movie from George, but in the tradition of his other classics, features some grim deaths at the hands of the dead.
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameo just for us fanboys.

How does it stack up against the original dead trilogy?

Better than Night Of The Living Dead, and Savini's remake. As good as Day Of The Dead. Not a patch on Dawn Of The Dead, but better than Zack Snyder's remake.
So somewhere in the middle. It's gory as hell though.

Just watched Black Dahlia. Not the glossy Brian DePalma movie, but a cheap gore movie. I invented a new genre just for this movie - GORENOGRAPHY. That's all this film is - gorenography. My mate brought it up tonight and goes "Man, you gotta see this. It's not the DePalma, but it's a super-gory sick flick". Well, ten minutes in and I thought, "This is terrible...". Twenty minutes in and I thought, "Have I fallen into a worm-hole? This is the same film..." Thirty minutes in and I actually said, "I am enjoying this about as much as I would enjoy watching a close relative die of cancer." By the 45 minute mark I had had enough. The quality of filmmaking here was actually worse than many porn movies I have seen, and I'm not a big porn fan. In fact the movie had the exact same structure as a run-of-the-mill skin flick. Girl goes to audition - girl gets murdered - cops have banter at crime scene - dumb arty surreal scene - girl goes to audition - girl gets murdered... And so it continues. For eighty minutes. I felt so used after watching this filth that I felt the need to research it on the net, just to see what other people's opinions were about it. Check out the reviews here www.imdb.com/title/tt0905968/Don't get me wrong - I'm a seasoned gorehound, but this was just taking the piss. I now have a much bleaker view of the movie industry having seen it. It was guerrilla filmmaking at it's most abysmal level. If Ulli says he had ANY kind of filming permit for this, he is clearly lying. Avoid at ALL costs, and I feel for those who are unfortunate enough to have had the displeasure.

lol everyone gave it 1 star including a certain 'warlordisgood' apart from a few people on page 6 of the reviews who actually liked it, probably the director and his parents.
The Brian De Palma film didn't get that great reviews as it is, but I really want to see it. Though not because I am fascinated by the Black Dhalia (I had never heard of it until the film came out and just thinking about the murder that poor girl went through makes me feel ill) but because of Scarlet Johansson, Rose McGowen and my favorite Mia Kirshner and I would even tolerate Josh Hartnett to watch them.

I saw Tarantino's Death Proof at the cinema. It had no plot whatsoever and the dialogue was far below QT's standards yet I found the whole thing very enjoyable especially Kurt Russell's performance in the bar during the films first half.
Anyone else seen this one yet?

I saw Identity the other day staring John Cusack and Ray Liota among others. I really liked it, until the final twist. While the final twist, well final two twists, weren't bad I just thought that it was a great horror movie up until that point and didn't really need a big twist. All in all very good film with great performances and you were never quite sure who was going to die next or just who was killing them. Recommened, kinda. ***

Just watched the new version of Casino Royale, and I have to say there's no sentiments here. Daniel Craig is the best James Bond ever, even better than Shorn. He's smooth, ruthless and a real action man.
And the film itself is by far the best Bond movie I've ever seen. I've never really considered myself a massive Bond fan, but I used to watch them every time they were on TV. But this new movie eclipsed all 22 previous Bond movies in terms of plot, action and pacing. And the acting was a vast improvement also. Sure there were one or two obligatory one-liners, but they were delivered at the right moment and with conviction. And the comedy was toned down a lot too, something which kinda put me off the whole Bond Franchise thing.
I also liked the fact that big name actors were kept to a minimum. There's nothing worse than seeing a movie where the villain is a bigger star than the hero. That was my main hate about Tim Burton's first Batman movie. Jack Nicholson was a poor choice in my opinion. He stole the movie, which defeated the object.
The characters in Casino Royale were all very well cast, and added a lot to my enjoyment of it.
I hope future Bond movies take a lot from this one, because I see Daniel Craig making this series his own.
I'd award it a healthy 8.5/10.

I watched WWE's crappy Steve Austin film The Condemned.
It really is that bad, it promises lots of action, which it does do but the acting is worse than an Ed Wood film imo.
If you can avoid this film, do it at all odds.

I didn't avoid it I'm afraid. I caught it a few weeks ago.
I didn't think it was that bad to be honest. Pretty cliched and unoriginal, but some decent action in it. The action was let down a bit though by the jerky camerawork and too-fast cutting. It was too much like watching a music video.
Overall I'd give it a just below average 5/10.

American Beauty is great film.
I saw the third Resident Evil film Resident Evil: Extintion.
It was alright. Not great. Not terrible. If you can ignore the fact that the films have no totally ignored the games storylines and not let things like plot or common sence get in your way while watching it, it's a pretty fun movie. It was cool seeing some of the games characters like Claire Redfield (even if she was played by Ali Larter who has no charisma at all), Carlos, The Tyrant and the super cool Albert Wesker. My favorite bit was right at the start where they showed a close up of a door opening in a very obvious nod to the original games loading screens.

I saw Sunshine the other night. Its main redeeming feature was having the yummy Chris Evans in it and while it was an alright film, it had potential to be so much better. Cant say much else without giving the plot away and spoiling it for anyone who might watch it.
Worth a look if the video shop is out of the other new releases-7/10.

Just watched Transformers. I didn't see it at the cinema due to never getting round to it, picked up the one disc edition today for $7 and man was I amazed. Possibly one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Although I might be being a little biased seeming as I grew up as a huge transformers fan.
