San Andreas for me. If you ignore the gangster theme it's actually a pretty good game. I loved the size of the map and there was so much to do. I still load it up today to have a fly around and jump off building's with parachutes.
Also the voice talent in the game was amazing, you had people like The Game and Samuel L Jackson lending their voices to the characters.

I'm gonna go with GTA III because that's the closest one I got to finishing, and it was the first to go [shadow=red,left,300] THREE DIMENSIONAL![/shadow]

I went for SA.
I think GTA III has the best city of them all, the best radio station (Chatterbox FM) and the best gangs. I think VC has the best soundtrack and feels the most iconic. However I believe that SA improved on both in nearly every way possible. Jets, parachutes, a likeable main character, engrossing story, more varied vehicles and two player modes are just a fraction of the big improvements. I think those that prefer Vice City just like it for nostalgia.

I think you are severely underestimating the charisma of the mute nameless protagonist in GTA III.

The Game was one of 50 Cent's sidekicks and plays B-Dup in the game. Not sure why Knox overlooked Chris Penn, William Fichtner, Danny Dyer, Peter Fonda, James Woods Shaun Ryder, Frank Vincent and Ice T to mention the Game's contribution to SA. Also despite saying that SA is the best I think the cast in the VC and GTAIII is better. GTA III has Michael Madsen, Joe Pantoliano, Frank Vincent, Kyle MacLachlan and Michael Rapaport while VC has Ray Liota, Danny Trejo, Tom Sizemore, Burt Reynolds, Lawrence Taylor, Jenna Jameson and oddly Debbie Harry from Blondie. No other game franchise has come close to the voice talents in GTA.

Well I didn't know all those people had been in GTA games, guess I'm not as clued up as you I did know about Dyer though, he was interviewed about it before the game came out. Jack Thompson labelled him a "Moronic Thug." Although to be honest I haven't heard of many from III and Vice City. (It's taken me ten minutes to type this in on my mobile. Good thread btw Woo, nice to see these forums with a bit of life.)

I think those that prefer Vice City just like it for nostalgia. You say that like it's a bad thing... VC has Ray Liota, Danny Trejo, Tom Sizemore, Burt Reynolds, Lawrence Taylor, Jenna Jameson and oddly Debbie Harry from Blondie. You neglected to mention the star of the show, DENNIS HOPPER! Vice City is the most influential game I ever played. Not in the sense that I wanted to go out and stab a sunbather in the throat with a katana, only in the way it influenced the way I viewed games. It was pretty much the benchmark for a new generation of realism. And it was so utterly compelling and enjoyable to play. When I finished it with 100%, Vercetti got a T shirt which read "I FINISHED VICE CITY AND ALLS I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T SHIRT." A small reward for such a painstaking endeavour.

^^ lol.
So with GTA IV out how does that affect your GTA rankings?!?!
Not at all?!! Oh, same here.
Okay I am being harsh on the game, but it is a disapointment still. The earlier GTA's (the better 3) grabbed you and wouldn't let you have yourlife back until the game had been completed or your hands were covered in blisters and blood from too much playing. IV didn't really do it for me.
The online play though is incredible and is responsible for one of my greatest gaming moments ever. Me and my brother put in my Socom headset and could hear to young Americans with what sounded like tourettes. They couldn't hear us for some reason, but we could hear them.
We could hear them talking to eachother and we eventually figured out what colour they were on our map and we decided to meet up with them, only we would be in a helicopter. They were under a bridge besides their car as we approuched them with evil intent.
American No.1: Hey look there's a helicopter up there. American No.2: Oh yeah. Anyway what should we do now? No.1: Hey that chopper is shooting us! No.2: No, it's shooting someone else. No.1: NO IT'S AFTER US, IT'S AFTER US! No.2: FUCK- GET IN THE CAR GET IN THE CAR. No.1: Hey I'm driving. No.2: You're a shit driver i'm doing it. No.1: No, let me! Fuck it's shooting the car, damnit just go!!
We then proceded to follow them as they drove down the freeway, firing our helicopters machine guns at them as they drove off in panic. Amazing.
...Actually I am sure I posted that moment before in another thread, but oh well.
Anyway my rankings would go from best to worst:
SA III IV VC LCS VCS GTA 2 London

Yep IV hasn't affected my list at all. It's pretty much the same as yours Woo.
Like you I was annoyed at how boring GTA IV got, it just seemed to never go anywhere and the suspense wasn't there to keep me playing. I did end up completing it though and I feel pretty let down in Rockstar for their poor efforts. It's almost as if they took all the fun from SA and threw it in the bin to say "fuck it! Lets make a serious GTA." Seriously when has GTA been about the melodramatics like GTA IV was?
Hopefully whenever Rockstar make a new GTA they'll realise where they went wrong, pull their head out of their asses and make GTA fun again.

Exactly right. They removed ALL the fun stuff. Yes it's more realistic, but fuck realism- this is a game! I constantly have people messaging me on MSN, Facebook, mobile, email- the last thing I want is for the characters in the game to pester me too!
I loved the crazy stuff in SA. The jetpacks, the go-kart, the hovercraft, the planes, the two player co-op mode. Also the parachutes! Incredible! (They might be in IV actually- I dunno?) It seemed like a major step back.
The main problem is the city itself. Let's just say that Liberty City sucks. It was fine in GTA III- it was the first 3D game in the series after all so we didn't know any better. It still had some character though- something IV sucked out of it completely. Then they traded in NY for Miami and the result was sublime. Vice City was a fantastic place. The cool 80's setting, the pink neon lights. Then we got a whole state! Yes the 90's setting didn't have the same feel as the 80's iconic atmosphere- but 3 whole cites in one game! Yes none of them looked as cool as Vice, though the Vegas city Ventures was close. Every 3 city, and the forests, deserts and mountains in between were unique, featuring their own characters and modes of transport and very fun to play in.
With IV and it's back to dreary old dark Liberty City and also back to present day too. In GTA III they amusing called it "The Worst Place to Live"- in GTA IV it's clear it's also the worst place to set a game in too.
The next one should be great though if it's a return to Vice!

Rockstar confirmed that Liberty City was the only one that wasn't done to how they wanted it to look, so I think they were wiping out any chances of a Vice City return for a new game there. Maybe DLC? Who knows!
Anyway, Liberty Shitty is awful in GTA IV. It doesn't seem to ever change landscape wise and the only fun you can have is but throwing Niko off of the top of the building. Although I would also do that if I lived there.
There are no parachutes in IV, it sucked. Infact the loss of planes sucked too. There are no fun vehicles to drive what so ever and the damn Cars and Motorbikes are just a chore. Who the fuck wants to have a realistic driving experience in a sandbox game? Fuck if I wanted that I'd play a driving simulator or step out and drive my own car.
Rockstar fucked up big time on GTA IV. Although I do like how it's taken us over six months do discuss our displeasure.

I never played any GTA games before but everybody at work was talking about the game. I mean my entire shift was co workers talking about their GTA experience like it was a part of their own lives. So I decided to buy it just to see what all the hype was. When I first started to play it I enjoyed it just because I've never played anything like this before. But I haven't played the game since June and probably only put in like 5 hours all together. Idk if it was me being too busy or the game just getting boring but I thought it was an ok game.
I don't really have a say on what is the best because this was the only GTA game I've played but I enjoyed it and thought it was ok.
