Whilst watching the UFC on Bravo last weekend, I was pretty astonished as Brock Lesnar was introduced to the crowd as the latest big name signing.
I caught his MMA debut in K1 a few months ago, and while he looked pretty good, it wasn't really that remarkable, even though he knocked out his opponent in a little over a minute.
So to hear he is about to begin a career in UFC came as a bit of a surprise, considering some of the big names he would expect to face in the heavyweight division.
The prospects are mouthwatering -
Brock v Andrei Arlovski
Brock v Tim Sylvia
Brock v Mirko Cro Cop
Brock v Jeff Monson (where's the beef?)
Even Brock v Pedro Rizzo or Frank Mir, if they ever decide to fight again.
But I reckon Randy Couture will be kicking himself now, as a fight with Brock would surely be a true headliner.
Having said that, it seems Couture, to his credit, is not after the big money, but the big fights.
Something which apparently Dana White is unable to deliver.
I still think Randy made a mistake by leaving UFC, but only time will tell. Maybe he feels he was in too much of a comfort zone, and needs to be tested more, but at almost 45 years old, there are definitely younger, stronger and hungrier fighters out there, all with a point to prove in a fight against the Hall Of famer.
Brock Lesnar I feel is in this category.
While being vastly inexperienced in the game, he is still only 30 years old, and comes with an exemplary background in legitimate wrestling, as well as the big fight atmosphere experience he gained in WWE. Also, his Ju-Jitsu is apparently well above average for someone who has only studied for only two years.
And he has Sean Sherk to thank for that, who reckons Brock's taken to MMA like a seasoned pro.
So with a record of 1-0-0, Brock Lesnar has seemingly leapfrogged many hardworking heavyweights in UFC to win a big money contract, which I am sure will leave him with no shortage of guys who want to make an example of "The Pain".
I hope his UFC career is long and succesful. I always marked for Brock, and cite his departure from WWE as the beginning of their downfall. He is a bona fide star who brings star power to any show he is on.
Roll on January, when he expected to make his UFC debut.
