I was re-organizing my dvd shelf this morning and realized I have a lot of depressing movies. So i got interested in making a list of them all because my school is still on strike and i've got nothing better to do with my free time apparently. So here's my list for top 10 depressing movies.
10 - The Invisible.
This movie kind of sucks, but it still makes my list based on the idea of being helplessly trapped with no one by your side. It also has an awesome sound track.
9 - Deep Impact
The earth being struck by an Extinction Level Event comet is one of my many irrational fears, which is the sole reason why this one makes my list. There are multiple character stories mixed in, and this is the space rock movie released in 1998 that didn't suck (looking at your shittacular movie, Michael Bay)
8 - Garden State
I loved this movie, Zach Braff's best film role imo. About a dude emotionally unavailable due to this perscription drugs, getting off them and starting to accept the world around him, including the love interest of Natalie Portman.
7 - Squid and the Whale
I've been pretty lucky in my home life in that my parents are still together and never fight in front of my sister or me, so i can really only sympathize for the characters in this film rather than empathize for them. Otherwise, i'm sure it'd be much higher up. The fighting, and eventual divorce proceedings, of the parents in this film wreck havoc on the two kids, who both take it hard and in their own way.
6 - Sideways
Essentially a story about two guys who feel life is empty and their attempt to make life what they want it to be. It's been a while since i've watched it, but I remember Paul Giamatti doing an excellent job with the character Miles, an unpublished writer who drinks too much.
5 - Wedding Daze.
I was surprised by how good of a film this one was. It's a really good strangers falling in love story that makes me wish it was possible to just walk into a restaurant and propose to some random hottie and find out she's completely the right person, despite the differences between one another.
4 - Little Miss Sunshine/Dan in Real Life
These two films protray two terrific acting performances by Steve Carrell with two incredibly depressing stories that I couldn't pick one over the other. Miss sunshine has an all-star cast, including Greg Kinnear and Alan Arkin, with a wide variety of characters with their own faults to overcome. Dan in Real Life is headlined by Carrell who plays a single father of 3 girls, and his struggle between being their parent over a huge family gathering over a long weekend and his love for a woman he randomly meets in a bookstore.
3 - Eagle vs Shark
This fantastic film makes my list because of how much the world shits on the main character, Lily, and how she keeps responding to it with optimism. She reminds me of a very close friend, and the way Jarrod treats her makes me wish i could punch him in the face (despite having his own well of depressing issues)
2 - Charlie Kaufman Films
I have to put all of his films in one because otherwise it would just be a charlie kaufman list. My favourite is Adaptation, although Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and Being John Malkovich are incredibly good to and Synecdoche New York and Human Nature both look great. All his films deal with insecure, neurotic and lonely men.
1 - Leaving Las Vegas
An alcoholic cashes in all his money for booze and moves to Vegas to drink himself to death only to fall inlove with a hooker while he's there. Nicholas Cage does a brilliant job, the script is sound, and the movie makes life just seem really, really bleak.
