Sporting Moment of 08

I was just reading a thread about the top 10 sporting moments in 2008 and I didn't know a single moment on the list... though one of them was a woman winning an Indy car race while competing against men which seems monumental.

Anyway these are my favourite moments of 08.

10. Ben Ainslie wins his 3rd Gold Medal.

Ainslie never gets much respect due to sailing not being very exciting, but he has won his 3rd gold medal in a row. He got gold in 08, 04. 00 and a silver in 96. Awesome.

9. Lesnar wins UFC title.

I still haven't seen this and think it was a bit iffy seeing as Randy retired, but yeah. A big moment.

8. The FA Cup.

Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea. Those 4 clubs have dominated the tournament for years. It was 1995 the last time one of those four didn't win. It was Everton that year beating somebody.....

Anyway this was the year of the giant killers! Barnsley shock everybody by making Liverpool a national joke....but Chelsea weren't laughing long as they were next to be knocked out by Barnsley. Man U knocked out Arsenal 4-0! Wenger said he didn't care about the cup and wanted to win the league and champions league.....Arsenal and Wenger won nothing. AGAIN. Anyway Man U were the next to go, being denied another Treble by Portsmouth who beat Cardiff in the final.

7. Manchester United thrash Chelsea in the Champions League Final......

.....Okay we won on penalties, but still it was gripping stuff! Of course if Man U had lost this moment wouldn't be here...

6. Chris Hoy wins 3 golds.

Chris Hoy, now Sir Chris Hoy must have been pissed when they removed his favourite event the 1K time trial, but he still won gold in all 3 events he entered. He was to the velodrome what Phelps was to the pool and Bolt was to the track.

5. Nadal ends Feeder's winning streak at Wimbledon.

Last year Rafa and Roger had a great 5 set match. This year it was incredible tennis and very emotional was Roger failed to beat Bjorg's record of 5 championships in a row and as Roger finally won in it. Great match.

4. Spain FINALLY shed their 'Under-achievers' moniker.

Without England being in Euro 2008 many people over here didn't bother to watch it. Those people missed a fantastic tournament with Turkey wining three matches in the final minutes being a particular highlight. But it's Spain winning a tournament for the first time since 1968 that will be remembered.

3. Lewis Hamilton- youngest F1 Champion and first ever black champion.

Minus a few dubious decisions by the marshals the whole year was sublime. Vettel's shock first win was surprising, even more so that he won it fair and square by merritt. The first ever night race was a visual treat and proved just how good Alonso is. There were also great drives by Kubica, who looks to be a real talent for the future. But it was all about Massa and Hamilton. The 2 best drivers of the year battling it out right down to the final race, hell the final corner! Let's hope 09 is just as good!

2 Michael Phelps wins 8 gold medals!

What else needs to be said! 8 in a single games. Incredible.

1. Usain Bolt wins the 100m in a world record!

OMG!

Some may have liked Phelps moment more, but for me this was the story of the Olympics. The man's a freaking legend and what was his secret? After the race he said he eats chicken drumsticks. Genius.

Oh yeah, that was in the other top 10 list I read.

Sadly baseball isn't on TV over here very much.

lol, unless your team is playing, baseball is very long and very boring.

Plus if your team year in and year out sit in the basement then you develop a hatred towards the sport

FYI, I have disliked Major League Baseball for well over a decade.

Eli Manning avoiding the sack, chucking the ball downfield and David Tyree using his helmet to catch the ball.

For me, this was the highlight of 2008. I hate the Patriots, and for them to go into the superbowl without losing a game the entire year only to get upset by the giants was awesome for me.

Superbowl was awesome for me but it hurts to say this but..

Man Utd winning the Prem League and ruining everything for Chelsea has probably got to be my favourite moment.

We're now trying to ruin your season two!

I read an interview last week where Ballack was saying that Man U are no longer a threat in the title race and it's between Chelsea and Liverpool. What a loser. It's going to be a Northen red team that wins it, not Chelsea.

Yeah in all honesty I think it will be one of the two between Liverpool and Man Utd who win it. Either way, both of those teams have 1st and 2nd occupied.

Being a Liverpool fan I hope we win it but our form is slipping as we seem to struggle against the simpler sides in the league. But either way, any team apart from Chelsea keeps me happy.
