So who else watched this then? I know Flyers did, so what did you think of it guys?
I am sure you all loved it, but I was so very bored. It seems that there is a reason 24 episodes are only 1 hour and that is because 2 hours features too much filler. It wasn't bad, the scenes with Jack taking down the bad guys was very fun, but I wasn't fond of the other scenes. If there is one storyline I hate in any show it's the one where somebody has vital information, but nobody believes them because of their past with drink/drugs and 24 just did that. Also another mole in the government- yay!...
I am still looking forwards to the next series though and for one reason- Tony Almedia.

I made the mistake of watching this on Fox. So many commercials, all telling me to buy the dvd version of the thing i'm already watching.
I don't think it was all that impressive. 24 has gone very, very downhill for me for one simple reason; it's all focused on sensationalism. I talk with Woo about this in the chat the other day in that more tv shows are focusing less on the characters and more on the plot and action. 24 is a prime example; in season one Jack Bauer was just a government worker with special ops background, whose family gets kidnapped and he faces incredible odds to get them back. Now Jack's only motivation is to save America from pending terrorist attacks. There's no real personal loss at risk, at least nothing substantial. Enter this season; jack bauer is james bond on coke. What was the most impressive thing Jack did in season one? Drive his car through a building in rage when he gets told his daughter has been killed, then marches down the docks to kill Dennis Hopper? Or maybe when he's in the jungle and kills off the first wave of baddies. Last season, Bauer highjacked a plane using some wire in the luggage compartment, this season when he kills half the coup's army.
I watched it because i've seen the series up to this point and have time to kill. It was nothing special.

Great post.
Here's a question, do you think 24 could have worked if they replaced Jack Bauer? Obviously they can't do that now, it's far too late for that as hi face is the first thing you think of when you hear "24" but maybe after Season 2 perhaps? During season 2 he actually died under torture before somehow being revived. It doesn't seem like there's any way back after that. That was the moment when he stopped being a human and took on a super heroic role I think. Last year they tried to being his family back into the fray, but it just doesn't work. If they couldn't sign Donald Sutherland then they shouldn't have even bothered.
I think killing off Tony was a huge mistake as he was the only thing that made Jack remotely human. He'd lost his wife, he killed his mistress, he killed one of his bosses and the other got radiation poisoning and his good friend David got killed off too. The only thing person he had left was Tony (well and Kim, but I never want to see her again unless she is being brutally murdered, or without clothes, possibly both).

this show has more proverbial red shirts than star trek!
I think you are absolutely right one with Bauer become superhuman at that moment and with Tony keeping Bauer human. I think it would have been real interesting had he, Jack, stayed dead. Suddenly, no one would be safe and the audience would really, really feel a sense of dread for the next larger-than-life character. More action tv shows need to take the courage to kill off main characters who get too big i think; imagine if in Heroes Peter died. Well, scratch that, because everyone comes back from the dead in heroes... but think, if the doctor died on Lost early on, or John Sheppard in SGA really got his hand cut off a few episodes ago rather than just dreaming it was cut off. That would be ballsy and create very good tension if the stuck to their ballsy action.
I was reading that Season 7 of 24 is going to have the storylines really toned down to focus on the characters in a sort-of rebooting of the franchise, hopefully we see more of a season one-two Jack Bauer.

I love how nobody replied to Carter's thread of the same title You're the MAN Woo! During season 2 (Jack) actually died under torture before somehow being revived. It doesn't seem like there's any way back after that. I thought exactly the same when they nuked L.A. Seriously who fucking cares about Maurice's alcoholism after that...? But this has all been said before. I hope this is a reboot of the franchise, as I reckon last season was the worst ever. It was amazing when the bomb went off, but that should have come towards the end, instead of leaving three quarters of a season to forget about the nuclear holocaust. I want excitement, and suspense, and full-on police raids and chases. Not fucking kitchen sink melodrama. I'll watch an episode of EastEnders for that, which I won't ever do. As for Redemption, it was OK, but I could have done without all the White House crap. If they need to draw out this long story, at least save it for the season. A two-hour slot should mean ACTION ACTION ACTION!!!
