I just noticed an icon on my desktop that wasn't there five minutes ago. Something called "Platte Account". I clicked it and it took me to this page secure.platteservices.com/error.php?code=10109But it said there was an error etc. Anyone got any idea what this is? I thought it was a bit dodgy. Why would a desktop icon be installed without my knowledge?

It's from a website for films, it automatically downloads on to your system. Not cool.
I found this for you, followe it's steps and it should disappear!
Simply open notepad and paste the following program into it (everything below the lines).
Once you've done that go to save it. Call the file platte.cmd and in the box at the bottom called "Save as type" select all files. I'd suggest saving it to your desktop so its easy to find. Run it the first time and once its completed it will tell you to restart. Do so and then run it a second time, it will talk you through the process as you go so you know when to restart and what's required of you. I have to confess that I've not been able to try this out myself, however it should work absolutly fine. Let us know how you go with this. ======================================================================
@echo off if not exist c:\windows\system32\pm_proc2.exe goto noplatte if exist c:\platteStage2.tmp goto stage2 echo Into Stage2 > c:\platteStage2.tmp echo Y| CACLS c:\windows\system32\pm_proc1.exe /D Everyone echo Y| CACLS c:\windows\system32\pm_proc2.exe /D Everyone echo Stage 1 of the uninstall process has completed please restart your computer and run this file again to complete the removal :stage2 del c:\platteStage2.tmp del c:\windows\system32\pm_proc1.exe del c:\windows\system32\pm_proc2.exe echo Stage 2 of the uninstall process has completed you should now be able to delete desktop icons for Platte and be Platte free goto exit :noplatte echo Platte Media is not installed :exit echo Completed pause

I did that, and it won't run. It comes up with the message:
Platte Media is not installed Completed Press any key to continue . . .
...which I do, and nothing happens.
Meanwhile, that icon keeps appearing on my desktop after I've deleted it, and then this morning I got a page waiting for me that said I recieved an invoice for 49.99.
WTF!?

I have no idea, that is fucking odd though.
Try looking around on some forums online, usually get good advice.

Yeah I looked and apparently it's pretty widespread. I got a tip from somewhere though that involved going into the registry and ripping out some shit, and it appeared to work. Fingers crossed so far so good. It's been about 18 hours and the fucking thing has not reappeared yet.
From what I read it's some company where you download films from and they bill your IP address as opposed to credit cards etc. Thing is I never visited this site before and certainly never signed up to anything like this. All the people on this forum I read all said the same thing too. They have no idea where it came from and no idea how to uninstall it. And when they phoned up the company, they spoke to some twat who said they owe them the money and if they don't pay they will take them to court.
How fucking WRONG is that?

That's very fucking wrong.
Still it'll be hard for them to prove that you owe them money. Get in touch with your internet provider to warn them, just to be on the safe side.
Who the fuck pays for downloads anyway?
