Christian's asked what side he's on, but he's being all cagey...
The show opens with JJ coming to the ring and announcing that the have made the “biggest signing in their history- Mick Foley.” The biggest in their history, erm no. Jeff then says Foley will be on TNA next week which must have annoyed fans their tonight. Angle then enters and all we need now is Sting in the ring saying nothing and it’ll be exactly like the end of the last Impact. JJ sucks up to Kurt and says he’ll get his gold medals back for him, but Angle then insults Jarrett’s family and Jeff accepts Angle’s challenge to a PPV match from last week.
Nowhere near as good as last weeks promo. Jeff accepted far too easily, I would have liked Angle to force him to get the match somehow rather than say “tell you’re kids you are a coward” ala’ Y2J/HBK and they just ran over what they said last week really. Plus JJ just giving the gold medals back to Kurt makes the whole storyline pointless too.
Rock N Rave Infection vs. Matt Morgan vs. Rhino
Wow, this will be a squash match. Let’s start the stopwatch. Just over two minutes. How stupid. Remember when Lance Hoyt was really over? Also Morgan’s finisher is terrible, it looked like he was DDT’d rather than being the aggressor, Team 3D then come out as D-Von runs down their very, very impressive title history but Matt Morgan acts like an ass and no-sells it all. Bubba then says us, you and any other team (as if any other team has a chance of winning it seeing as how this has been built) will compete at Bound For Glory in the tag team invitational, but that match will be a Monster’s Ball Match! Abyss freaks out after hearing the stip and goes all scared-Mankind-ish as he hates weapons now. Team 3D rule on the mic and I like this development with the M Ball match as it works out well with the storyline and should give us a good solid violent match.
We get another part of the Roxi video packages and I was wondering what the point of this was, but I think they are going to build her up to feud against Kong once she wins the belt, which makes sense and should a fun feud. Shame Kong has destroyed here several times already though. We then get another video package for Bound For Glory, I have to say the Chicago gangster theme is golden! I love it! Morgan is a corporate bitch- “I’ve I had to order one TNA PPV, well first of all I would get them all, but it would be Bound For Glory.”
In the back with Beer Money. James Storm says if they lose Miss Jackie will be gone and that can’t happen. Wrestling is the only thing she knows and that they could have any other valet, but they don’t want a Angelina Love or a Velvet Sky, they want the toughest woman on the planet! (I thought that was Awesome Kong?) LAX, sorry about your damn luck.” Jackie storms off and Roode tells Storm that if they lose, she is gone for good. Well 1. If Jackie likes wrestling so much, why does she spend all her time as a valet? And 2. She won’t be gone for good, she just won’t be their manager.
Awesome Kong vs. Mercedes Steel
Steel is obviously a jobber brought in from some local indy fed an the fans know that full well as they begin the “Kong is gonna kill you!” chant. Steala hates that chant, but I like it. Kong does indeed win easily and continues the assault after the match as her manager Reza Rashid (sp?) brings a steal chair into the ring. But then swerve- Reza hits Kong! She takes of the mask and it’s, it’s….Roxi???! Roxi beats down on Kong while the real Reza makes her way to the ring with her arms tied together with rope, obviously being tied up for Rozi earlier tonight.
The match was the usual squash (that’s two matches- two squashes tonight), but the segment afterwards was good. BUT- isn’t Kong meant to be feuding with Wilde now? That angle should have happened AFTER Kong won the title. They could have said Roxi was injured after her brutal bloody beat down and then she could have made her triumphant return. Wilde looks like an afterthought right now which is insane as SHE is the champ. While watching this I thought it would have been great if the real Rashid then revealed herself to be Taylor Wilde, who then continues the ass-kicking on Kong.
We got to a Karen’s Angle segment with Christian Cage. She asks for his thoughts on the veterans vs. TNA originals storyline. Cage candidly speaks saying he can see why the TNA guys are angry, but on the other hand it’s guys like him and Angle that were responsible for PPV buy-rights and ratings go up (which didn’t actually happen…) He says things between him and AJ are good after their argument last week. Karen then turns into Jeremy Paxman from News Nights and says “what side are you on.” “I’m not decided.” “What side are you on?” “I’m not decided.” “WHAT SIDE ARE YOU ON!!!” “Um……” his telephone rings and he then gets up and leaves. I quite liked this segment. It makes sense for him to be in the middle of the whole feud. Yes, he is one of the WWE veterans but he arrived in TNA before it was the cool thing to do. I think he’s turning heel though.
Hector Guerrero then cuts a rather incoherent promo on Beer Money. He really does look like his late brother.
We then get a very long video package for Against All odds, which is pointless as that was the LAST PPV. It’s a Booker T promo now which more than makes up for that. Booker is rapidly becoming my favourite TNA guy. He’s freaking hilarious! He talks about how things change in TNA, but back where he comes from in Africa (ah so the African accent was on purpose) there is always a King and a Queen like him and Sharmall. He says AJ’s been here for 6 years, yet Booker accomplished more in his first 6 minutes and “what does the AJ stand for anyway?” He then tries to stir things up between AJ and Cage again and hints that Styles can’t trust him saying “Keep your enemies close, but your friends closer.” Great! We also get an awesome “Jeremiah” again. JB tries to touch the mystery brief case again but Booker and his queen both give him an hilarious evil look.
LAX w/ Hector Guerrero vs. Beer Money w/ The Pride of Tennessee Miss Jacqueline
Damn I don’t know who I want to win. LAX is my favourite team whoever Storm’s “sorry about your damn luck!” catchphrase is great and that justifies the whole team imo. Okay if we think about this logically they were probably going to run this angle all along, but after Salinas left they just threw Hector into the mix. Now they could have ignored this angle if they wanted Salinas gone as she left anyway which mean Jacqueline will be the one to go and LAX will win. Fine with me, she should be a singles wrestler anyway.
Okay my theory went to pot……Beer Money win which means Hector can never manage LAX again! When did he EVER manage them?! Damn, poor LAX- sorry about your damn luck. Good match from what we saw of it I have to say Storm and Roode really have gelled as a team now and work well together.
We cut to a new segment called “The Love-in” featuring Sonjay Dutt and Sol Cal Val half naked in bed (where they have been for the last ten days), joined by interview Lauren, who is wearing stupid pyjamas at the request of the Guru. Sonjay tries to touch her leg, which made me laugh. I’m shallow. Lauren asks Val how she could betray Lethal. She doesn’t care and asks Dutt again if he’s dad is the richest man in India and confirms this. Val then asks “and when he’s gone all that money is yours right?” with $ signs in her eyes. Dutt says yes and they make out- I am so envious of Sonjay.
Out comes Sting who delivers one of the greatest promo of the year. Nuff said.
In the back now with Abyss who is freaking out about the Monster’s Ball and says he doesn’t want to compete in the match- Morgan says “he’s been waiting ages for this big match” what a jerk. He then talks Abyss into the match saying “you have to face your fears.” I think and hope this angle will end with Morgan being a jerk, attacking Abyss and making him face his fear in a brutal hardcore match.
We get a video package about the last Steal Asylum match, hyping the one at BFG and it looks like it will be a hug cluster-fuck. But a very entertaining cluster-fuck at that.
Interview now with Samoa Joe who does another fantastic promo. He seems calm and says that’s because the lion is calmest right before the kill and that’s what he’s at right now. He tells JB the feud with Sting isn’t about respect, it’s about Sting’s fear. Fear of becoming obsolete. I am really liking these promos, but at sometime we need to get Joe and Sting face-to-face and steer the focus away from Jarrett/Sting and onto Joe/Sting. Sting’s promo helped direct the feud back to where it should be but we haven’t seen these two have a face-off for weeks now. Jay Lethal and Creed then walk up to Joe, showing their support to him and where they stand in relation in this ongoing feud.
Shiek Abdul Bashir vs. Samoa Joe
Oh shit….NOTHING good can come from this match. Bad booking. Joe can’t destroy Bashir as he is the X-Division champ and that will make the whole division look week, but Joe selling for Bashir just looks wrong as he’s been treated as a jobber thus far in TNA. I didn’t hear the airplane noise at the start of Bashir’s music so hopefully that’s gone now. Bashir put up a fight and dominated the match, but lost in the end with the Muscle Buster, but then gets himself DQ’d after choking Bashir out after the match to prove a point to Sting about respect. What kind of message was that? “I’m an idiot?” “I don’t respect this jobber champion?” Stupid. I know they wanted Bashir to look strong and get more over, but he’s the X-Division champion! If that belt meant a damn thing any more he would already be over.
AJ Styles then gets an interview, makes fun of Booker’s new stupid accent and then has a go at Booker for trying to drive a wedge between him and Cage. “You wanna drive a wedge between us? Well I’ll shove a wedge right up your…” before stopping himself for some reason. Maybe this is a PG rated show? Anyway the PG Rated Superstar then says that he’ll see Booker in the ring.
Booker T vs. The PG Rated Superstar AJ Styles!
But wait, Cage is coming to the ring too, what’s he doing here?! I was thinking that this will probably lead to a Cage heel turn and end with AJ vs. Cage at Bound For Glory, but seeing how Booker is being a bitch and stirring shit and also has nothing to do at BFG himself I now reckon it will be Styles vs. Booker with Cage as the ref. I still think Cage will turn on AJ and we’ll then get a great feud, I hope he stays face. Cage/AJ is great, but it’s been done before.
Good match. I thought Lethal had a pretty decent match with Booker last week, but this one was even better. I wouldn’t mind seeing this two feuding on PPVs. The match ended, as you knew it would, with both AJ, Booker AND the ref being knocked down. Sharmall enters with the mystery briefcase and goes to hit AJ, Cage grabs it from her but then AJ sees him in the ring and asks what is going on. Booker stirs things even more by shoving AJ into Cage and then smacking Styles with the case for the 3. The King and Queen celebrate while the Christian Coalition squabble as we go off air.
--------
A good show again. MUCH less stupid “Cross the line promos” which is a major plus, but I don’t know where that time went as the matches themselves weren’t long at all and the two longest had an advert break during them. There were some very questionable decisions too- JJ breaking his “I’m not a wrestler” claim rather easily, Roxi’s return over the Wilde/Kong program they were building (unless of course they are going to have Kong beat Roxi at the PPV and then go after the title) and the whole champion vs. champion fuck-up.
However there were two good matches and the promos with Booker, Styles, Cage, Angle, JJ, Joe, Team 3D and above all- Sting were amazing. They may not be wrestling, like their old tagline claimed, but they are still good entertainment. Cross the line!
Overall 3 stars this week.
