Okay last month I did my countdown of the best 10 films of the 00's now I am going to go further back in time to list my top 10 films from my favorite decade. The decade of Britpop, grunge and err, Girl Power. It's also a decade of fantastic films as this list proves.
Okay I realized that there is just too many to choose from so here's my top 20.
20. Home Alone- A nostalgic favorite. The two stand-out scenes are the ones where the crooks try and break in only to be thwarted by Kevin's hilarious traps and the other great scene is where he plays the video of the old gangster movie on Marv and the poor Pizzaman "Keep the change you filthy animal!"
19. Beauty & The Beast- Okay I am a Disney mark but I feel that this is the best film they ever made. The songs aren't quite as good as Little Mermaid but this was a great film, not just a 'great Disney film' and was the first, and so far only, animated film to be nominated for 'Best Film' at the Oscars/
18. Jurassic Park- OMG! This was amaaaaazing! I loved dinosaurs when I saw this film....I was terrified by them afterwards. Sadly Jurassic Park doesn't get much respect these days, which is a shame. Funny how the CGI in this film looks so much better than the Star Wars Prequels and many films years later.
17. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me- I was torn between this and the original, but this one introduced us all to Mini Me so gets the nod. Quite possibly the best spoof movies ever.
16. The Big Lebowski- Just edging out Fargo as the Coen Brothers' best film. It deserves a place just for the tagline really- 'Her life was in their hands, now her toe is in the mail" rofl. Anyone else think The Dude reminds them a bit of a stoned Cactus Jack?
15. The Shawshank Redemption- One of the most popular films of all time for a reason, it's perfect.
14. The Matrix- Don't let the two god awful sequels put you off- this is still great!
13. The Sixth Sense- I saw this at the cinema and did not see the twist coming at all and it blew me away. A must-watch-twice movie.
12. Terminator 2: Judgement Day- A rare thing, a sequel that is better than the original. Great!
11. From Dusk Till Dawn- I loved the way this started off as a good typical 90's gangster movie only to be turned on it's head completely halfway through. Selma Hayek's dance is also a-fucking-mazing!
10. Scream- Okay this one will be an unpopular choice to some, but I loved it. The film is a perfect parody of slasher films such as Halloween, Psycho, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw and other horror greats such as Carrie and Silence of the Lambs. It cleverly disects the basic elements of horror film conventions (as demonstrated by the 'Rules on how to survive a horror movie' scene) and it parodies these in a way that retarded films like Scary Movie just can't comprehend. It's also a damn good slasher film in it's own right and the fact that this parody ended up being parodied itself means it must have worked.
9. True Romance- From the writer of Reservoir Dogs (yay!) and the director of Top Gun (wtf?!!!) Great movie that has an almost embarasingly good cast, all of whom are in very memorable roles- Christopher Walken has a mob boss (he thought he'd try something new...) James Gandolfini of Sopranos fame as....a mobster... Brad Pitt as a loser stoner, Chris Penn and Tom Seizemor as slimy cops, Samuel L Jackson in a two minute cameo, Val Kilmer as Christian Slater's imaginary friend- Elvis, Dennis Hopper as Slater's Dad and best of all Gary Oldman- as a Black pimp!!!
8. Reservoir Dogs- The film that made Tarintino famous. Steve Buscemi is possibly my favorite actor and his rant on tipping waiters is my favorite scene in this film. However the iconic shot of the 'dogs' walking down the street has to be one of the most famous movie scenes ever.
7 L.A Confidential- Brilliant tense modern film noir featuring an all star cast set in the hey days of early Hollywood.
6. Goodfellars- This would be most people's #1 choice and it's not hard to see why. Joe Pesci won an oscar for this film.....just don't call him funny...
5. Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels- Trainspotting didn't make my list, so this is the only British film here. Oh well, it's great. The plot is a bit sketchy but this is hilarious and full of great bit's of dialogue that are infinitely quotable- "Guns? A minute ago this was the safest job in the world, now it's turned into a bad day is Bosnia!"
4. Hard Boiled- This best thing about this film is that it's stupid. It plays out like a simple video game where the good guys shoot wave after wave of goons while jumping over/through/off things in slow motion. Sounds good right? The 40 minute hospital shoot-out is epic.
3. Fight Club- Wow, just wow. This film blew me away and every time I see it I notice something that I never noticed before and I wow all over again.
2. Pulp Fiction- QT has wrote/directed/produced many films since but nothing has come close to topping his 94 classic. The scene where Marvin is killed is dark comedy at it's best.
1. The Usual Suspects- My favorite film of all time. It's just master storytelling and an amazing mindfuck in general and features one of cinema's best bad guys, Keyser Soze. Fantastic performance from Kevin Spacey won him a deserved Oscar.
