UFC's most famous and highly respected referee "Big" John McCarthy refereed his final match last weekend, with the bloody classic between Clay Guida and Roger Huerta.
For those who saw it, what a way to end such an illustious carreer for Big John. It was the most frenetic breakneck-paced war I've seen for many many years.
For the record, Huerta won by tap-out in the third and final round, after the most to-and-fro battle you'll see for time.
Also on the card, Mac "I'm experienced" Danzig predictably won the title of The Ultimate Fighter, and the six-figure UFC contract, by comprehensively beating "Farmboy" Tommy Speer, whose size and strength advantage proved no match for Danzig's superior skill and, you guessed it, experience.
Man, he never let us forget that fact did he?
In other UFC news, President Dana White has announced the coaches for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.
They will be Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, and original TUF winner, Forrest Griffin.
Should be interesting. Kind of like a MMA version of Morecambe and Wise...
Matt Serra pulled out of his proposed grudge/title match with Matt Hughes due to a herniated disc he sustained in training.
A real shame, as that was gonna be one of the highlights of the calendar for me.
So my boy Georges "Rush" St. Pierre has stepped in to hand Matt Hughes's ass to him. Hopefully.
This will be for the interim welterweight title. (I never really understood what that means. Anyone care to explain?)
Sean "Muscle Shark" Sherk has been suspended and stripped of his lightweight title, due to a positive nandrolone test. I heard last weekend it was steroids, but meh...
So anyway, BJ Penn and TUF contender Joe Stevenson will now face off for the vacant 155lb title in Newcastle on January 19.
This must interfere with Brock Lesnars preperation for his debut in February, as he is apparently pretty thick with Sherk, and has been part of his training camp for the last few months.
I hope Brock lets this incident pass him by and concentrate on his own thing, cos I really want him to look good in his match against Frank Mir, although I reckon Mir might take him to school.
Finally, The Iceman Chuck Liddell gets a chance at redemption after a series of crushing defeats, when he faces Pride legend Wanderlei Silva on December 29, which also features the St. Pierre v Hughes bout.
Could be a stunning end to 2007. Here's hoping for St. Pierre and Liddell to be victorious.
