Didn't Dennis Leary steal a lot of Bill Hicks' stuff? I was watching Channel 4's '100 Greatest Stand-Ups' and it said that they used to be friends until Leary started copying some of his material. Somebody said that they asked Hicks why he gave up something and he said "to see if Dennis would...." in reply.

I was waiting for this... Somebody said that they asked Hicks why he gave up something and he said "to see if Dennis would...." in reply. It was "smoking". And I've heard the comparisons and accusations for too many years now. All I say is deal with it. I loved Bill Hicks, but just prefer Leary's more "in your face" method to Hick's deadpan approach. The thing about Bill Hicks is that many people have adopted him as some sort of anti-hero since his death, and Leary has suffered from it. I prefer to think of him as Leary's role model and main influence, and that he is continuing the work Hicks began but didn't get chance to finish (boy am I gonna get heat for this...). But I think Leary's TV and film work seperate him from Hicks, and shows him as a far more versatile performer than people give him credit for. For me, Bill Hicks was a genius not of comedy, but of observation and interpretation. His life experience gave him more inspiration than most of us could imagine. So to really compare the two would be like comparing The Beatles with Oasis. On the one hand you have a band who transcended fame, and became a part of world culture, and the other was a sixties band from Liverpool (joke by the way). But seriously, I'm neither a Beatles fan nor an Oasis fan, but I see validity in both entities.

Yeah, I don't have a list, but I just wanted to say that Jim Gaffigan is my favorite stand-up comedian.
