Well I went to see Sweeney Todd at the cinema last night and I have to say that it was easily one of the best films I have seen in the cinemas for years. At first I was unsure about the music, for the 30 seconds, but the music is superb. There is one wonderful scene where Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter's characters are talking about turning Todd's victims into pies and they are looking at the window discussing who they should cook, but singing about it instead. Black humour at it's finest.
It's also great to see the likes of Depp, Carter, Timothy Spall and especially Alan Rickman singing. Rickman was fantastic as the film's villain and after seeing him in Die Hard and Prince of Thieves I could never have imagined him in the film like this. Also in the film Ali G and Borat's Sasha Baron Cohen (sp?) and his introduction into as a singing Italian rival barber is one of the films many highlights.
The only problem with the film is that it might be a bit too grizzly for some (though it should be expected given the source material). Also fans of horror might not like the singing while musical loves might not enjoy the gory stuff. However I loved it and although it's only February I think this may very well be film of the year for me, though a certain superheroes and a British secret agent might have something to say about that.
In short- watch this film. *****

Yeah, a musical about a hair dresser who kills lots of people and turns them into pies?
Surely that makes it more up your alley?

Nope, musicals suck. I hate the bloody things, I was hoping ti was going to be an all out blood and gore movie. What kind of a musical is rated R?

What's the problem with it being rated R? Do you think musicals should never be 18 rated, or do you deteste singing with your hardcore touture porn?
Come on, there must be 1 musical you like? Oliver? Wizard of Oz? Grease? Disney films in general? I bet you're a big Rocky Horror fan.

Never seen Grease, I've seen Oliver but only in School, was forced to watch it too. Don't think I've ever seen Wizard of Oz either. I avoid musicals at all costs.
As for Rocky Horror, no. I made the fatal mistake of seeing the stage show, I've never seen anything like it before. Scared the shit out of me.
