Finally got around to watching Martin Scorcese's The Departed last night, and while not up there with the likes of Goodfellas and Mean Streets, it's still pretty much an in-yor-face tour de force of the highest degree. Dunno whether it warranted all the oscars draped upon it - I believe it was more a career-thanks to Scorcese - but it's still pretty relentless in it's language and depiction of violence.
I knew this was a remake of Hong Kong fave Infernal Affairs beforehand, hence my hesitation in watching it until now, but I can say I enjoyed it way more than the original. I thought the characters were far better defined, and the story was relatively simple compared to the rather convoluted Hong Konger.
Jack Nicholson snarls his way through all the best lines, as one would expect, but from a personal standpoint, Mark Wahlberg with his relatively minor role, steals the show. He has this annoying habit of doing that in almost every film where he plays a supporting role, and I rate him very highly indeed.
Great performances from an ensemble cast, and a few dodgy accents aside, it's one of Scorcese's top five films in my opinion, better even than Gangs Of New York.
I'd recommend it to any fan of quality crime thrillers.

I love this film, though I am not sure if I pefer it to the orginal Infernal Affairs. The Departed at times is almost a frame for frame remake of IF and borrows aspects of IF2 as well. I didn't like the way that Damon's fiance gets involved with Leonado Di Caprio, I dunno it just seemed a little err, convienet...but it's a great film and I reccomend it as I also do with the first two Infernal Affairs films.
Mark Whalberg is hilarious in this film and runs away with the film like you said. His conversations with Alec Baldwin were superb as were some of his other lines "I'm the person who does his job, you must be the other guy."
Btw did anyone else think that Matt Damon with his baseball cap on looked a little bit like John Cena, or is that just me?

Btw did anyone else think that Matt Damon with his baseball cap on looked a little bit like John Cena, or is that just me? At no time during the film did I think Damon did NOT look like John Cena. He was the absolute spitting image throughout It even got to the stage where I was imagining Cena in the role. Crazy. I'm the person who does his job, you must be the other guy. I loved that line also. Made me laugh out loud at the simple pure genius of it.

My mate said he watched this Saturday night and loved it. I always wanted to go see it at the cinema but never got round to it. So I went to blockbuster yesterday after trying to hunt it down and couldn't find it anywhere to buy. I rented out a copy and got it home all excited about watching it. Safe to say I was pissed when the disc wouldn't work, took it back to BB and they haven't got anymore copies in till tomorrow.
