I found a lot of covers done by Aaron Lewis (of Staind) lately and they're all quite good (I honestly think he has one of the most powerful voices) but one of his that really struck me was his version of Pearl Jam's "Black".
I'm sure many disagree, but from someone who likes Pearl Jam: I think I actually prefer Lewis' version of the song.
But then again I'm a big fan of his.
So share yours, we can discover, dispute and debate.
Lists are fine, but reasons would be great to hear about as well.

May Way- Sid Vicious- On the old forum I got slated for saying I loved this song, but I think it's really cool. You have to watch it with the video, that way it's hilarious with the fake crown clapping along to the horrific lyrics. The best bit is the line "To think, I killed a cat" which gets a huge applause.
The Man Who Sold The World- Nirvana- In fact all the covers they did were great on the MTV Unplugged show. The bands finest hour and the songs are so powerful and some really sad.
Love Machine- Arctic Monkeys- Okay I'll admit that I really like Girls Aloud and love their original. The Arctics version was fun, amusing and you can hear that the band were having a great time recording it. Too bad that lead singer Alex Turner tells people to 'fuck off' whenever they ask him to sing it now.
I'll Be Missing You- Puff Daddy featuring Faith Evans- I included writing 'Faith Evan's because I think her part of the sing is the bets bit. Some may view the song as simply a cash-in on Notorious B.I.G's death, but it's pretty good. Not as good as the Police's though.
Come Together- Michael Jackson- As a kid I was a huge fan of MJ and really liked his song Come Together before I even knew it was a cover. I still think it's a great song and the way he sings it and the opening riff is a great combo.
I had some more and another one I really liked but forgot it as I was typing.

The Ataris version of Boys of Summer. It's fantastic, I like it because it adds more of a punk rock edge to it than the original.

Best cover I ever heard was of the Joan Baez 60's classic Diamonds And Rust, performed by Judas Priest on their Live '98 Meltdown album. They covered the song first back in the seventies, but this version is an acoustic version, sung by the then new singer Tim "Ripper" Owens, and stands as one of the most passionate pieces of vocal work I've ever heard. It's one of them songs that sends a shiver down your spine and gives you goosebumps on your forearms.
Check it out and see how it makes you feel.

I also like Lacuna Coil's cover of Enjoy the silence, although being the electropop freak that I am, I also like Depeche Mode's original. I love Cristina's voice, its really haunting on this track. I love Metallica's cover of Turn the Page and Whiskey in the Jar. The guitars make them sound so different from the originals, and you cant mistake James Hetfield's voice, he's one of those people that cant actually sing, but can... bah that makes no sense, I know what I mean. I love his style, the tambre of his voice. I heard a cover of Teardrop the other day by Newton Faulkner and I had to listen to it a couple of times before I was sure, but he has actually made a good job of it and its now on a cd in my car. Lovely voice, smooth guitar, really does justice to the song and the lyrics. Cant think of any more off the top of my head, but Im sure theres loads... EDIT- Gah Sam wanted reasons!

The reasons are great though. ;D
... or did you add them afterwards?
Anywho, I agree with the Coil cover and that leads me to list another, I think Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park did a cover of the same song and it's really good. I'd definately recommend giving that a go.
I played the Tallica cover of Whiskey to death so sadly I hate it now.

I used to like The Lemonheads cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson. I heard it again recenly though, and I can say it now sucks.
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes do some pretty awesome covers, one of the best being Mandy, a song Electra probably remembers fondly as being sung originally by Barry Manilow. They also do some pretty sick covers of songs by Neil Diamond, R Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel and even Sinead O' Connor (yes, it's that song).

Come on Kel, you must remember him singing it. We all know you had a thing for old Barry back in the day. Admit it!

Yeah, you already confessed your unrequited love for Neil Diamond, how can you now deny The Manilow?
Hey, if they ever made a film about Manilow's life, Bill Fichtner should play him. That's him who plays that sadistic FBI bloke Mahone in Prison Break, as if you didn't know. The resemblance is just wrong.

Lol. I have never noticed a resembelence between them two. I think if there was a film Gerry Anderson of Stingray/Captain Scarlet fame should make it as he always reminds me of a thunderbird.

Im not a big fan of covers usually as they tend lose the real value of the song in a cover to make money on a popular song, however My favorite cover would be Seether's cover of Immortality from their One Cold Night Live Album, It is probably influenced by my love of Seether over Pearl Jam as I believe Shaun has a better voice, I personally think the song benefits from being a slower pace. This also benefits from falling into my favourite sort of sound, I favour the slow paced grunge/ blues sound over any other music type
Its really difficult to describe what a song means to a person actually

One example of a cover version that completely outclasses the original, is Joe Cocker's version of The Beatles' A Little Help From My Friends. Cocker took that song and totally rearranged it, making it his own, and in the process making the original sound like a playground ditty.
I'm not a massive fan of either, but I know quality when I hear it.
