I just got the new MEGADETH album United Abominations, and I have to say it's pretty much a triumph. To say only two short years ago, mainman Dave Mustaine had to retire due to a condition which affected his hand - he plays the guitar - this is a superb bounce-back return to form.
It reminds me a lot of their fourth album Rust In Peace, in terms of song structure and most importantly the immensely crisp and clear production. I consider Rust to be their best album, so this comparison means I rate this new album very highly after only a couple of listens.
There is also a great reworking of their classic A Tout La Monde, featuring that girl who sings for Lacuna Coil on guest vocals.
From what I have read recently about Mustaine, it seems he has used his hiatus to focus on himself and his own shortcomings as a person. He made no secret he was a grade-A twat in the past, but he appears to have turned over a new leaf and his new found lust for life shows on this latest release.
Maybe being "born again" has a lot to do with it. I don't necessarily believe in this born again thing that people do, but if his belief in God has anything to do with his maturing as a man and a musician, then I'm all for it.
I have a newfound respect for Dave Mustaine and Megadeth.
MEGADETH - United Abominations = 8/10 from me so far.

I've just bought "Awake" by Dream Theater.
Prog-metal genius!

Do you know what? Dream Theater have been around for like, donkey's years, and truthfully I have never really given them a listen. I'm pretty sure I'd love them now, especially since my love of all things prog has grown a lot lately. I really need to check them out.
I am listening to the brand new ICED EARTH EP Overture Of The Wicked right now. It's kind of a taster of the new album due out in July, and it sounds pretty tight. Tim "Ripper" Owens vocals once again are top-notch.
I reckon Iced Earth must have one of the fastest rhythm guitar sounds in metal.

White Stripes - Icky Thump.
A major improvment on their last record, which I only heard a few times and very quickly decided that it was bad.
Icky Thump bring the stripes back up to the same form they hit on their Elephant record. If you like White Stripes I suggest you give it a listen.
