10. Elvis Presley- Jailhouse Rock
Okay this re-release should be No.1 on my list, but that would just feel like a total cop-out.
9. Nizlopi- JCB
One of the strangest No.1's of the year. A 5 year old's tale of riding with his farther in a JCB and imagining Transformers, Bruce Lee and Mr T helping him defeat the school bullies. Sadly kept off the Christmas No.1 by X Factor flop Shane Ward.
8. Gorillaz- Dare
Damon Albarn & Sean Ryder, how could it fail?!
7. Pussycat Dolls- Don't Cha
I couldn't name a single other song released by the Pussycat Dolls, but I always like taking the piss to this song on a dance floor.
6. 2.Pac feat. Elton John- Ghetto Gospel
5. Madonna-Hung Up
I'm not a fan of this Madonna track myself, but it was a huge hit.
4 . Tony Christie- Is This The Way to Amarillo
The years biggest hit thanks to Peter Kaye's excellent miming cover and video and it was all done for charity. A great feel-good anthem and an even better video featuring The Happy Mondays Bez and Ryder, Roger Taylor and David May from Queen, Bungle, Sotty & Sweep, Mr. Blooby and of course Ronnie Corbet who hilariously falls over.
3. Oasis- Lyla
I was torn between this or The Importance of Being Idle, but I went for the lead track from their album 'Don't Believe The Truth', their best album since the legendary What's The Story Morning Glory.
2. Stererophonics- Dakota
I have a lot of time for the Phonics and think this is the best song they've done. I very nearly gave it the top spot.
1. Arctic Monkeys- I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor
The Arctics exploded into the charts at No.1 from literally no where in late 2005 with this cracking tune. I think not only is it the best No.1 of 2005, it may be the best No.1 of the decade. The video is equally good made using 70's camera equipment making it look like something The Buzzcocks would have made 30 years earlier. Ignore what Alex Turner says at the start- do believe the hype.
So now for the worst single of the year...
James Blunt- You're Beautiful
I'm sure some of you expected to see this as the worst No.1 of the year, but I feel like James Blunt is given an unfairly harsh time simply for writing this song, which truthfully is quite good... I am also sure you'll agree that this isn't the worst No.1 of 2005, or even the 2nd worst later on.
So what can be worse than James Blunt? Enter Akon...
Akon- Lonely
UGH!!! SHIT, SHIT, SHIT SONG!! But even THAT wasn't the worst song of the year as not only is the following one impossibly even more annoying but it RUINED one of the 80's best movie soundtracks ever.
Crazy Frog- Axel 5
