John Cena- What do you think about him?
Now when John first came into the WWE on SD with his sickly Rocky Mavia style babyface persona I wasn't to keen, though his first match with Kurt Angle was brilliant and his second with Chris Jericho was good as well, he was still very bland, much like Randy Orton around this time. John just turned up in those god-awful tights, smiled a lot did crap promos about "ruthless aggression" before losing a closely fought match.
But then the WWE did a master-stroke imo and turned him into Vanilla Ice and slowly I turned into a fan of his. Well actually I was a much bigger fan of Bull Buckanham, but then he was awesome. He had many, many gimmicks in the WWE but I will always remember him just for one word- BOOYAH!
Over time though Cena grew with his heel persona and his raps were genuinely funny. Hell even his "You cant see me" wave was cool too. He then started a feud with Angle which produced some great segments between the two and ended at No Mercy 2003, which I still think is Cena's best match ever. It's one of my favorites too as the crowd was really hot and split between both Cena and Angle.
Then though they turned Cena face and after the first few fun months (his rap at SSeries was hilarious also) he slowly turned real sour real fast. The edgy raps were gone and the fake Vanilla Ice gimmick suddenly turned ultra serious. I remember laughing my ass off at Cena's reaction to Kenzo Suzuki singing 'Crazy In Love' "don't ever do that to my mate Jay-Z again" lol. Also the 1920's Gangster theme before his Mania match with HHH was laughable.
IMO he turned into the devil-spawn of Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior as he no-sold everyone on the roster and main evented every PPV despite his terrible homoerotic character (the chain-gang thing is so gayer than He-Man with a handlebar moustache) and lack of wrestling ability that hadn't shown much improvement since his PPV stealer against Angle back in 04.
But over the last 12 months or so I think he has really improved and been in some very good matches (the whole feud with Edge culminating in that TLC match, last man standing with Umaga, main-eventing Mania with HBK before going 50 minutes+ with Shawn in London). I think he has been the most consistent performer in the WWE over the last 15 months.
Yeah, so what I am saying is that as wrong as it feels to state this- I am a John Cena fan again. There I said it. I couldn't hide it any longer. Sure he still isn't the best worker by a long shot, but compared to the other guys they have pushed over the last few years he is by far and away the best and he isn't useless and ugly to look at (Kennedy & Khali) he doesn't shit in women's handbags (Orton) and he isn't a complete and utter price (Orton again). Plus the split reactions he gets from the crowd make an incredible atmosphere.
John Cena get well soon!
