Okay I forgot about these threads, though I was the only one still posting in them lol. Anyway I may have done this year or not.... but I'll do it now anyway just to make sure.
I'll have to do 10 again as there are too many to chose from including a great RVD/Christian ladder match from Raw along with the great Matt Hardy/Rey main event from Smackdown. Here are my top 10 though.
10. Triple H vs Shawn Michaels- Raw
This was on the last Raw of the year and was for the World Championship. I found their feud to be very tiresome, but this was before it got dull (that was 2004) and this match really had you believing that maybe HBK could win the title. He didn't.
9. Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar- Wrestlemania XIX
Everybody raved about this match, but imo it's not the best on the PPV and is actually my 3rd favourite, which just goes to show what an amazing Wrestlemania it was. The infamous shooting star is what it's most remembered for, but it's a great match that lived up to all the expectations.
8. The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin- Wrestlemania XIX
From the same PPV this was the end to one of the greatest rivalries in history. It's not a patch on their perfect match two years earlier, but it's better than their Wrestlemania XV match however and this one sees the Rock finally go over. This was the Rock's 2nd to last match and Stone Cold's final one and what a way for them both to go out. The highlight being the final moment after Rock won when he shoved Earl out of the way and appears to be trash talking into Austin's ear. In actual fact he was basically saying that he loved him and thanked him. Awww. Compare that to HBK's comments to Earl Hebner about Bret after their historic ironman match "Tell that piece of shit to get out the ring."
7. Kurt Angle vs John Cena- No Mercy
I remember this match so well and how John Cena was red-hot around this time and the fans were slowly turning him into the new people's champion... till the WWE messed it up. Cena does another hilarious rap and then the match begins and it was fantastic and much, much better to their rather mediocre feud a few years later. Angle got the win, but as people tend to look after a Kurt Angle defeat John Cena looked like a megastar.
6. Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit- Vengeance
This match is very much like the one above it actually as we see a heel slowly becoming a beloved babyface and that was exactly what Eddie was becoming here in this match to determine the new US champion. Their Armageddon match the year before didn't exactly tear down the house, but this was fantastic and Eddie was hilarious as always with his attempts to lie, cheat and steal his way to the title.
5. Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle- Smackdown
These two fought so much in 2003 you are probably trying to remember what match this is. I'll help you out with one word- Ironman. This is possibly the best ironman in WWE history, which says a hell of a lot as while there haven't been many they have all been excellent. This one was great as it used a tactic I always thought would be brilliant as Brock gets himself DQ'd and takes a loss of a fall, but due to the chair shot is able to take advantage and quickly get two falls to go into the lead. The end was dramatic as it predictably all comes down to the ankle lock with seconds to go.
4. Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team- Vengeance
TWGTT's moniker was no lie, in 2003 they were the best tag team in the world. It wasn't a huge claim as they were the only decent one for most of the year, but boy were they awesome. I am going to take some huge stick for this, but imo this is the 2nd best non-stipulation match in WWE history and was another sublime match on an excellent PPV. Compare this Smackdown only show to the Raw only Badd Blood prior and you can see what brand was better at this point in fact out of the 12 matches I have mentioned only 3 of them involve Raw superstars...)
3. Survivor Series Match
HBK, RVD, Booker T and The Dudleys vs. Y2J, Orton, Steiner, Mark Henry- Survivor Series
I mentioned this match in my countdown of the best SSeries matches a few months ago and stand by those comments. This was fun, but when it came down to HBK vs Orton, Christian and Jericho with Austin's career resting in the balance things went into a whole new level.
2. Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels- Wrestlemania XIX
This was a dream match I had wanted for years and years and then it happened and was better than I had even hoped it would be. The highlight for me was Y2J tuning up the band and giving Shawn a sweet chin music, but not before doing a quick Jericho shuffle before delivering the kick. Hilarious. The end with the faux hug into a low-blow was a moment that should live through the ages. Strangely it took them 5 years to have a meaningful program again and that one was an even better feud, though none of the matches matched this one.
1. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit- Royal Rumble
The bets match I have ever seen.
