Flyers' thread gave me the idea of making a thread about my favorite year in wrestling- 2001. Some my moan about the botched InVasion angle, but the wrestling quality itself was top notch.
Royal Rumble- Great PPV and the first one one I stayed up for. The tag team title match between Edge, Christian and the Dudleyz was exciting and the ladder match between Benoit and Jericho is a classic and would have overshadowed most years Rumbles, but 2001's was possibly the best ever imo.
From Big Show's return, HHH attacking Austin and of course the best match in Kane's career.
No Way Out was also very good with HHH vs Austin 2/3 falls the highlight. Other good matches were Trish vs Steph, Rock vs Angle and the Y2J vs Eddie vs Benoit vs X-Pac.
Mania 17 was fantastic as well with lots of MOTY contenders. Austin vs Rock, which also had a shocking ending, Angle vs Benoit was the start of a great rivalry. Shane vs Vince was a good pantomime match and TLC 2 easily lived up to the first one.
Backlash wasn't quite so good, but did still have Angle vs Benoit and a very good Rhyno vs Raven it also had Shane jumping off the titantron which was great.
Judgement Day wasn't great either, but the Tag Team Turmoil was very good featuring teams like the Hardyz, Dudleyz, APA and um.... the Radicalz... but towards the end it got very good with Y2J and Benoit (who had 5 matches on this PPV) vs The X-Factor and then a corker against Edge and Christian.
KOTR was good. It could have been better if Undertaker wasn't such a prick and put DDP over just a tiny bit. Booker T made a surprise debut and attacked Austin in the main event. I preferred it when Booker and Shane were the faces in the inVasion angle. But the night will be remembered for Kurt Angle's 3 matches. Beating Christian in the semi final, Edge in the final and then a breathtaking match against Shane O' Mac.
InVasion was fun. Of course RVD vs Jeff Hardy was brilliant, but there were others too such as E&C vs Storm and Awesome, the 10 man main event and Kidman vs X-Pac.
Summerslam had it's moments. RVD vs Jeff was cool bar the botched ending. Lance Storm vs Edge was great and X-Pac vs Tajari was good. Angle vs Austin weren't half bad too.
Unforgiven was possibly the worst PPV of the year as the only things I remember from it are the RVD vs Y2J hardcore championship match an Steph McMahon promising to make RVD's time in the alliance very "pleasurable"..... that should have lead to a great HHH vs RVD feud when Hunter returned imo. But they botched Van Dam as soon as HHH came back.
No Mercy was alright. The main event between Angle/RVD/Austin was good but Y2J vs Rock was simply a classic match-up.
SSeries had a few good ones. The Immunity battle royal was really good, I think they should have pushed Test pretty far after he couldn't be fired for a year. The cage match between the Hardys and Dudleys continued their amazing feud even if Matt's heel turn never really worked afterwards. The main event was brilliant featuring most of the best wrestlers from 2001, and Undertaker, in one match.
Vengeance wasn't too good as none of the matches are classics. That said the 3 main events were good with Y2J rightly winning and becoming Undisputed Champ and the fun RVD vs Taker match, finally a good Taker match in 2001. He was voted 'Most Abysmal Wrestler of the year' in Powerslam magazine, and I agree entirely. However in this match he improved a lot and showed some of the good form that would see him become one of the best wrestlers in 2002.
There was also some very good matches om Raw and Smackdown in 2001 including Angle vs Benoit in a cage match and TLC 3 on Smackdown.
All in all a hell of a year for the WWE.
